Approximately 10% of seniors suffer from mental illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's, for which there is currently no cure. However, progress can be slowed down. In order to support caregivers and families, NEMA proposes four options.
Empowering Seniors and Caregivers: NEMACare's Four Options for Managing Mental Illnesses in the Elderly
Caregiver Training: Caregivers often face significant challenges when it comes to managing seniors with dementia. NEMA offers training modules to help families better understand and care for their elderly loved ones. These modules are provided free of charge and aim to provide valuable support and knowledge.
In-Home Care: Families can choose to have a dementia-trained healthcare attendant from NEMA provide care within the comfort of their own home. Not all care attendants are equipped to handle the specific needs of seniors with mental health issues, but NEMA ensures their attendants receive the necessary training. These care attendants stay with the elders 24/7 and require accommodation and meals. The cost for this service is approximately 30,000 rupees per month.
Daycare: In situations where having a care attendant at home is not feasible, NEMA offers daycare services at their care home. Seniors can be dropped off at the care home after breakfast and engage in physical and mental activities throughout the day. They will receive a nutritious lunch and afternoon tea with snacks before returning home. This option provides a structured and supportive environment for seniors while giving their families the flexibility they need.
Care Home: This option is primarily suitable for families with NRI/PIO parents or those who prefer a dedicated care facility. NEMA offers a 4-star care home with independent fully furnished rooms, including ensuite toilets. Seniors receive comprehensive care with 24/7 nurses attending to their health needs, healthcare attendants assisting with daily activities, and six meals a day. The care home ensures entertainment and a secure environment for the seniors.
It's important to note that each option has its own advantages and considerations. Families should choose the option that best suits their specific circumstances and the needs of their loved ones. NEMA aims to provide various solutions to support caregivers and enhance the quality of life for seniors with mental illnesses.
